The Beginning...2011 Growing Season

March 13, 2011

We put up a new indoor green house today and started some of our seedlings.

Todd started Bell Peppers, Banana Peppers, Hot Spicy Peppers, Cabbage, and Broccoli. I started Coleus, Impatiens, Alyssums (Pink, White, and Purple) and 4 Petunias.

Last year none of the flowers took, I hope the green house helps this year.

Todd brought up the idea to also have a garden in one of the community gardens. I think this is a great idea since we had so many problems last year with our garden. Maybe a different location would guarantee a more bountiful garden.

Todd started seedlings for tomato (Roma, Beef Steak, Large Red Juicy, and Cherry), Squash (Buttercup, Butternut, Spaghetti, and Summer), Cucumbers (Divas and Pickling), Leeks, Celery, and Iceberg Lettuce

Todd checked into the community garden. It looks like we would need to go to the Rec Center and sign up for one on the first Monday in April beginning at 7:30 a.m. last years cost is only $19 for residents and the lot is larger then our garden. I believe we are definitely going to be doing this as well as our own garden.

I learned today that if you plant radishes near your cucumbers, it helps fight off cucumber beetles. I think we are going to try this with some of our cucumbers.

Later this week we plan to pick up grow lights to add to the greenhouse.

Todd started the first tub of lettuce and the baby spinach.

I spotted sprouts today our first. Broccoli and Cabbage.

We realized the day before that we were just not getting enough light, especially to the second shelf and below. My flowers were not sprouting due to the lack of light. We made the decision to go pick up grow lights. We installed the lights today. Now hopefully my flower seedlings will take off as well.

The seedlings are loving the light and in just one day we already see a difference. I see some sprouts with my Impatience and Alyssums. The flower sprouts were just too tiny to show up in a picture, however look at our veggies. Wow did they take off. We also have several new tomato sprouts.

Back left corner is the same squash that was just starting to bloom. They love the light.

Just look at all the new sprouts and growth of tomatoes in just 1 day under the lights.

Middle section is zucchini and butternut and spaghetti squash.
